More Aussies Back Gender Equality, But Many Cling to Disturbing Beliefs

A growing number of Australians support gender equality, but many still cling to disturbing views of violence inflicted on women. So reports The Sydney Morning Herald, citing a nationwide survey.

The National Community Attitudes towards Violence against Women Survey of 17,500 finds that one-third believe that men rape due to their inability "to control their need for sex." More than 40% of Australians believe it is common for women to level sexual harassment allegations to retaliate against men.

Nearly 15% of those surveyed also feel men are superior to women in both politics and the workplace.

The survey is done every four years.
