Australia Has An Issue with Holiday Hoarders

Many Australians have adopted an all work, no play philosophy to their jobs, which is testament to their commitment, but makes them prone to burnout. So reports Smart Company.

Hoarding up on holiday time is going up in the country, a new survey of more than 10,000 workers by online travel website Expedia finds. Slightly more than 16% of those surveyed took zero leave in 2018.

"We have a couple of team members in particular who've been with us a number of years, they're so dedicated, but they've hoarded their leave inadvertently because they're so committed to their work they don't think to take time off," says Amy McWaters, chief operating officer at Sol Group, the parent of Gifts Australia and The Hamper Emporium. "It's a good issue to have, but it's really not, they need to take a break."

One concern for hoarders may be a fear of being seen as replaceable if they are not around, while others may feel guilty about letting the rest of their colleagues shoulder all the work. "It's that mentality of always being available, with people working from home there can be grey areas between picking up your phone and looking at an email," McWaters says.
