Alastair MacGibbon, head of the government's Australian Cyber Security Centre, recently alleged that Chinese intelligence services may have hacked into major global technology companies.
Hewlett Packard, SAP and IBM were among the largest software service providers that were reportedly hacked, which in turn placed these firms' client companies at risk.
"It's the biggest and most audacious campaign I've seen," MacGibbon said.
Thousands of Australian businesses rely on these software provider giants to store, process and protect their data, including the firms' human resources and accounts management operations.
China has rejected the allegations.
