Japan Wants Companies to Keep Workers Working Until 70

Japan is encouraging companies to hold on to their employees until they hit 70 as labor vacancies pile up amid a fast-growing elderly population. So reports The Mainichi.

The government also plans to go further and ask firms to support already-retired workers to find new jobs, start their own companies or work as freelancers. While the traditional retirement age is 60, employees are permitted to work until 65 if they so wish and employers are required to bring them back if they did retire.

“It is necessary to provide a variety of options to make use of the expertise of elderly workers,” says Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
