Andreas Graf had already used up all his annual leave time to care for his 5-year-old son who suffers from leukemia. But just as he was preparing to go back to work, Graf lost his wife to heart disease. Now a widower, Graf contemplated quitting to deal with his wife's loss and to watch over his son now as a single father.

But his HR manager, Pia Meier, reached out to Graf's fellow employees and asked that they donate their overtime in order for Graf to have the time to spend with his son. All of the factory's 650 workers agreed and within two weeks worked 3,264.5 hours of overtime, allowing Graf a whole year off with his son.

"Without this tremendous help, I would've been out of a job by now," Graf said.
