Employers Tapping Social Media To Scope Out Prospects Reaches New High

Social media can be fun, but it’s serious business for 70% of employers who use it to screen prospects before hiring them. So reports CareerBuilder

That percentage represented a new high and is up from the 60% of bosses who turned to social media last year and just 11% who used it in 2006, CareerBuilder notes in a new survey. The survey also found that 57% of employers are less likely to interview a potential hire if they can’t find them online and that 54% have rejected candidates based on what they found on their social media profiles.

The national survey conducted from Feb. 16 to March 9 by Harris poll included a representative sample of more than 2,300 hiring managers and human resource professionals in different industries and companies.

"This shows the importance of cultivating a positive online persona," says Rosemary Haefner, chief human resources officer at CareerBuilder. "Job seekers should make their professional profiles visible online and ensure any information that could negatively impact their job search is made private or removed."
