A new CareerBuilder survey found that 44% of millennials ages 25-34 and 39% of those 18-24 are holding down side jobs. That compares with 29% for those 35-44, 22% for those 45-54 and 19% for those 55 and older.
The online survey of more than 3,200 workers in private sector jobs was taken May 11 to June 7. Some common side jobs include survey taker, childcare, freelance writer, house sitter, blogger, bartender and tutor.
The more unusual side jobs are mystery shopper, BBQ contest official and tattoo apprentice. "Side hustles not only provide financial benefits to workers, but they make them more attractive candidates to employers, especially in a competitive job market," said Rosemary Haefner, Chief Human Resources Officer at CareerBuilder.
"When you're applying to jobs, especially when you're at the start of your career, other applicants could have more experience in your particular field. If you bring more skill sets to the table and have a unique perspective on how things can be done, you're sure to stand out from the crowd and be seen as a valuable potential hire."
