Most teachers who leave (55%) walk away within the first three years of working for the district. School officials need to step up their recruitment efforts, says Deborah Story, human resources director.
“What we do know, is that consistently hundreds of teachers are needed to be hired every year,” Story says. Sharon Pertiller, human resources director of talent strategy, said the district needs to provide teachers with the proper tools to help them succeed.
There are wide ranging reasons for why teachers are leaving. “It’s a compilation,” Pertiller said. “It includes someone brand new to teaching, from a different district and someone from a different state. They can be new to the profession or new to the district.”
