Kate Murphy is charged with a range of HR responsibilities, including overseeing sexual harassment complaints stemming from the Capitol. Murphy has worked for the state’s Department of Transportation since 2006 in a number of positions, including as director of the Office of Employee Services. Murphy also has more than 20 years experience in HR management, including in the private sector.
“My work in the private sector gave me a management foundation in customer service, problem solving and urgency,” Murphy wrote in a Nov. 8 letter to Secretary of the Senate Charles Smithson and House Clerk Carmine Boal. “The last ten years at the Iowa Department of Transportation has me analyzing problems at the root cause, better listening, investigating and seeking customer/stakeholder input to decisions, while maintaining and growing my servant leadership example.”
Murphy will start Jan. 21. Iowa lawmakers began their search for an HR director following a settlement on a sexual harassment case, as previously reported in PHRM.
