How the Fastest Growth Companies Made the HR Leap

Human resources did not factor into the equation when some of the fastest growth startups launched, but it didn't take long for them to realize the value of having a department dedicated to the role. So reports Inc.

For John Simpson, co-founder and CEO of Patra, a firm the provides processing and account services for the insurance industry, HR has helped in wooing millennials.

"Addressing a huge recruiting effort was a big part of it," Simpson says. "Millennials don't find insurance exciting, and we needed someone who could figure out how to appeal to that generation of job seekers."

Beth Monaghan, CEO of InkHouse, a public relations/media company, realized the importance of an HR manager who could keep their emotions in check.

"When you're small and you've just started, it's like you're family," Monaghan says. "Sometimes your employees won't feel comfortable coming to you with certain issues because of that. Around the time we took on our 10th employee, I saw the value of hiring someone who was not emotionally involved to deal with those concerns."
