General Mills Upgrades Its Policy for New Mothers

General Mills recently instituted a major change to its maternity leave policy that will allow new moms to take 18 to 20 weeks of paid leave. So reports CBS 46.

The new policy also allows fathers, partners and parents who adopt to take up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave. This change represents a major upgrade from the old policy where new mothers were allowed six week of paid leave, while fathers, adoptive parents and partners only received two weeks.

"We spent a lot of time talking with the employees at different life stages and asking questions about their pain points and what contributes to feeling torn between work and home," says Jacqueline Williams-Roll, chief human resources officer. "Out of those discussions, we developed a strategy to focus on these moments when employees really need support the most."

Another benefit upgrade includes two weeks of paid leave for employees to care for a sick family member and more time off for bereavement leave.
