SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition Kicks Off June 22

It's the main event for HR professionals in the country – and very likely the world. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Annual Conference and Exposition is being held next week from Sunday, June 22 to Wednesday, June 25 at Orlando, Florida's Orange County Convention Center.

It's always a major go-to event for the HR community, but somehow the 2014 event seems even bigger than in recent years. Maybe that's because the economy is finally being nursed back to health and unemployment insurance claims are leveling off. Or, maybe its because companies and HR professionals can once again focus their attention on growth & development and current & future trends in an ever-evolving workplace -- instead of downsizing, retrenching and retraining.

The speaker list includes many prominent names from academia, the media, national politics, and of course high-level professionals from the HR, business and legal communities. Here's a partial list:

• ABC's "Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts
• Former First Lady Laura Bush
• New York Times columnist and author Thomas L. Friedman
• President & CEO of New America Foundation and TV news commentator Anne-Marie Slaughter
• Yum! Brands president & CEO David Novak

More than 200 concurrent sessions over the four-day event are designed to present the most current and innovative thinking pertinent to HR careers and education, with nearly 50 opportunities for recertification and training. They are organized according to the following buckets:

• Business Management & Strategy
• Compensation & Benefits
• Employment Law & Legislation
• International HR
• Talent Management
• Personal & Leadership Development

The Exposition features more than 200 exhibitors from a broad cross-section of industry, including household names, major players in consumer goods, financial services, legal, Silicon Valley, technology, the non-profit world, and other sectors, manned by representatives from a comprehensive selection of HR professionals grouped by categories and sub-categories:

• Compensation & Benefits
• Employee Relations, Labor Relations
• Global HR
• Health, Wellness & Safety
• HRM Programs and Services
• Professional Development
• Talent Management
• Technology

A sampling of broad concurrent session topics, including continuing education and recertification classes encompasses:

• SHRM Certification
• Workplace Bullying
• Global Workforce
• High-Powered Recruitment
• Employee Engagement
• State of Workplace Benefits
• Social Media
• Integrating HR throughout the Organization
• Developing and HR Dashboard
• Leadership Development
• Building a Culture of Innovation
• Technology Solutions

The conference and exposition also features four days of networking opportunities with HR colleagues and peers from across the country and overseas; a Tuesday night conference with country music star Tim McGraw; high-tech connectivity via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and SHRM Connect.

HR communities and conference tables will be discussing ideas and takeaways from the SHRM event for the remainder of the year and into 2015.
