History-Making NFL Rookie Close to Another Completion

Six months ago, Michael Sam made history as the first openly gay football player to be drafted by a National Football League (NFL) team, the St. Louis Rams. Although active players in other men's sports, notably soccer and basketball, had already taken the same step toward equality on the playing field, a U.S. pro football team was not expected to be next in line. So reports the New York Daily News.

Just prior to the start of the 2014 kickoff, Sam became the first openly gay player in the NFL to be cut from a squad – and after a fairly impressive pre-season. Granted, he was not the only Rams rookie to be released, but observers wondered how much of the decision was based on Sam's ability, and how much of it was due to his notoriety.

Now he's poised for a second chance with the Dallas Cowboys – who seem mainly interested in his professional skills.
