‘Lying’ Candidate Deserves Questioning Before Rejection: Advice Columnist

Workplace and management expert Alison Green suggests it’s prudent to get an explanation from an apparently lying applicant before outright rejection.

In her advice column, published in the Albany Business Review, she navigates a tricky inquiry about a seemingly-qualified job applicant who claimed to work at a company, yet there was no mention of him on the company’s website, and employees contacted at the company had not heard of him.

Because of the chance for error, she suggests confirming the details before moving on to another candidate. However, she said if the candidate is lying, she does not think it’s within the purview of the hiring company’s responsibility to tell the company the applicant claimed to work for that he is misrepresenting himself.
