HR Efforts to Attract More Women Truck Drivers

Lack of awareness is a big hurdle for human resources departments as Canadian trucking firms contend with attracting, recruiting and retaining female drivers. So reports Today’s Trucking.

Just 3% of Canada’s truck drivers are women, Statistics Canada reports. The industry needs to step up its advertising to feature more images of women, says Linda Young, vice president of HR and people development for Bison Transport.

While women usually ask more questions than men during interviews, women are still interested in same things that men want from the profession, says Caroline Blais, recruiting manager for Kriska Holdings. 

The differences come into play more around generation instead of gender, she noted. “Young individuals are looking for flexibility among other things,” Blais said. The industry has to find ways to provide greater flexibility that millennials want and also to create greater overall excitement for truck driving. "Our industry isn't very glamorous,” she said.
