Dress for Success: The Cultural Implications

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor was raised by struggling immigrant Hispanic parents, her father an alcoholic and her mother something of an absentee parent. Yet she managed to be accepted to Princeton and is by any standards a classic American success story. So reports The New York Times.

 

How much did overcoming adversity shape her path to the top? According to a new book by two Yale professors, it may have played an outsized role. The authors hold that success among different cultural groups in the U.S. sometimes flies in the face of established stereotypes. But, above all, there seems to be a common “triple-play” factor as a common denominator in the recipe for success. And it’s a combination of psychological and sociological traits that seem almost counter-intuitive.
