20th Century Workaholics Becoming 21st Century Slackers

It's hard to believe. After decades of studies indicating how much harder people in the U.S. work than our European counterparts, and how much less vacation time we take, it seems like the tide is finally turning stateside. So reports The Wall Street Journal.

According to the Department of Labor's annual American Time Use Survey, Americans are actually sleeping more and working less – for the first time since the survey began a decade ago.

The findings might seem counterintuitive in some ways, what with people multitasking on cell phones, hand-held computers, tablets, blue tooth in our cars, and all the other ways that technology has been speeding up our world, both in the workplace and at home. And yet, the working population is aging and recovery from the Great Recession has been slower and more gradual than typical economic recoveries.

Not only are more people retiring, but many are still having difficulty finding full-time jobs. Or maybe we're just starting to smell the coffee.
