Royal NZ Ballet Deals with Exodus of Talent

The Royal New Zealand Ballet acknowledges it needs to do a better job in making its members feel welcome after 10 of its 36 dancers left the company in the last year. So reports Radio New Zealand.

The dance company hired an independent reviewer after the high turnover with its troupe. Out of that review came several recommendations, including conflict training for managers and a recommendation to hire a human resources manager.

"We probably erred on the formal side," says Steven Fyfe, dance company chairman. "We took a complaint, we took it seriously and lapsed into the formal interview."

The author of the independent review, however, recommends "that in a well functioning organisation, you actually have certain people within the organisation who are empowered to have conversations," Fyfe notes.

The dance company also needs to do better in recruiting local New Zealand dancers, Fyfe acknowledges. The review did find that the company, however, handled bullying complaints.
