Reports of 'Voluntary' Unpaid Meetings Prompt Big Reforms at NZ Retailer

A large New Zealand retailer has promised to pay a living wage to its 541 employees after accusations that it had failed to pay its staff for attending 'voluntary' morning meetings for years. So reports NZ Herald.

Smiths City Group was ordered to give impacted employees six years of back pay. It also promised its workers one extra holiday this year.

"We want our staff to be enthusiastic and excited about their work; to feel they are benefitting personally from working at Smiths City; and that they are learning new skills and gaining the experience to develop an enduring and prosperous career with the organisation and in the retail sector," chief executive Roy Campbell said. "Fundamental to the development of this culture is paying Smiths City people fairly for a fair day's work."
