These firms are embracing the so-called “right to disconnect” concept that some European countries have adopted as law. One early adopter in Japan, Osaka-based YRGLM, a software company, has urged its 140 workers, since 2011, to go on a nine-day vacation at least one time a year. During those nine-days, employees are prohibited from using their phone, email or social media networks to engage with the firm.
“They aren’t able to get in touch with anyone from the company, so they make sure not to cause any trouble for their colleagues by communicating in detail all their business affairs,” a YRGLM spokesperson said.
