The women are using Twitter to lambast employers who have implemented the ban by using the hashtag “glasses are forbidden.” The social media outcry came after a television program reported on businesses that were banning women from wearing glasses at work.
One restaurant worker said her boss repeatedly told her not to put on her glasses, saying this would be “rude” and that it was not a good look with the traditional kimono she wore. “If the rules prohibit only women to wear glasses, this is a discrimination against women,” Kanae Doi, the Japan director at Human Rights Watch, told Reuters.
Earlier in the year, Japanese companies were being blasted for demanding women wear high heels to work.
