Obama Mandates Paid Sick Leave for Federal Contract Employees

President Obama decreed by executive order on Labor Day that employees working under federal contracts are required to be offered paid sick leave. So reports Corporate Counsel.

According to the White House, the move will provide a paid leave option for approximately 300,000 employees in the private sector. It is estimated that some 40 million American workers don’t have the benefit, which, along with raising the minimum wage nationally, has become a signature of the President’s domestic policy aims for helping the middle class.

The order impacts federal contracts taking effect in January 2017 (coincidentally when the White House will change hands), under which employees will be able to earn one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours they work – up to seven or more days off per year.

Workers can use the time off to tend to their own illness, or that of a spouse, child, parent, domestic partner, or any other individual deemed to meet “the equivalent of a family relationship.” The White House joins four states and more than 20 municipalities (including New York and Los Angeles), as well as a growing roster of companies, that have passed their own paid-sick-leave laws and rules.

As with the President’s previous minimum-wage executive order requiring federal contractors to pay federal workers at least $10.10 per hour, in-house counsel at companies using federal contractors will have their work cut out for them making sure their firms comply with the order.
