Lloyd penned an op-ed enumerating the women’s desire for “equal pay for equal play.” She noted the women’s team is the most successful U.S. soccer team in history, winning four gold medals and a World Cup and it drew record breaking ratings for a soccer match during July’s World Cup. However, on average, top women’s players are paid a fraction of the top men’s players.
The women’s team contributed to $17.7 million in profit for the U.S. Soccer federation, she added. She also noted that while the men’s World Cup generates more globally, in the U.S. the women’s team is projected to generate a profit of $5.2 million in 2017 compared to a loss of $1 million for the men’s team.
