Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey noted that while it's "a sad commentary on society," the reality is that being a potential victim of an active shooter is more likely today and that "you have to worry about it."
Ivey recently spoke at the annual Space Coast Human Resources Conference in a presentation entitled "The 4A's of Survival in the Workplace." The four As stand for awareness, avoidance, arm and attack.
One attendee at the meeting, Kelly Paton, the HR manager at Melbourne-based Sun Plumbing, said she agreed with Ivey's message. But she also acknowledged some tough questions HR would have to face including whether service providers should be allowed to carry a gun into a customer's home and whether an employer can prohibit one employee from carrying a gun while allowing another to do so.
