Employee: I Lost Out On Maternity Program Job Because I'm a Man

Tampa-based nonprofit, The Children's Home, has agreed to pay an employee $18,000 to settle allegations that he was rejected from a maternity home program position due to being male. So reports HR Dive.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed the suit on behalf of Luis Vasquez. Vasquez alleges that management told him they weren't "sure if they would accept males to work at the new motherhood program" and that he was asked "can you imagine males changing pampers, working with babies and with pregnant girls?"

The nonprofit told Vasquez there were no other positions for him, he alleges, only to find out that a less-experienced woman employee was selected for the position, the EEOC noted. In addition to the settlement, the chief HR director is required to give a yearly message to workers about equal opportunity and to report to the EEOC about its hiring practices in the maternity program over the next two years. The human resources staff also is required to have annual training.
