For its recent study, "Workplace 2025: The Post-Digital Frontier," Randstad surveyed more than 800 C-suite and department leaders and almost 3,000 employees in the U.S.
The survey finds that 75% of employees ranked their work computers, laptops and devices as the most important part of their physical work space. Nearly 70% ranked WiFi as most important, while 47% said air conditioning/heat is a priority and only 24% said a clean bathroom was most important.
The study notes that "only 42% of companies completely or strongly agree they are restructuring their HR departments or revising their strategies to leverage digital and mobile tools, and only 51% of those that are say they are highly or very effective at doing so."
Jim Link, chief human resources officer for Randstad North America, called the survey's finding a "wake-up call" for businesses to up their digital game. "In fact, even the most time-honored frameworks for achieving fulfillment in the workplace, like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, need to evolve to include digital elements and how they can be used to deliver an exceptional employee experience," Link said.
