Pittsburgh Firms Target Workplace Diversity

Pittsburgh companies across different industries are stepping up efforts to make their workplace environments more diverse and inclusive. So reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

"In the past, we had a [diveristy and inclusion] person in charge at the corporate level, but it's something that needs to be woven into everyday practice," says Kevin Miller, managing partner at Northwestern Mutual. "We're in the throes of a big diversity and inclusion project right now."

Every month, Miller's firm hosts diversity strategy meetings and separately invites employees from underrepresented groups to meet every so often where "you just find people have good ideas that wouldn't be heard otherwise."

Another firm, S&T Bank, sees diversity as integral to its ideals, says George Basara, director of HR. "Many rural markets are not highly racially diverse."

Trucking company, Pitt Ohio, is trying to address the lack of diveristy in the transportation industry. "We're trying to attract more women into a predominantly male profession," says Brain McGuire, vice president of HR at Pitt Ohio. "Women can drive trucks just as well as men can, sometimes a lot better."
