HR Head Continues to Don Suits Virtually Even On Casual Fridays

Whether live or virtual, you won’t find Maurice Barrett taking shortcuts when reporting to work as Newark Museum of Art’s new senior director of human resources. So reports Daily Record.

business man 2103088 640Barrett’s start date on March 16 was also the last day the museum was open due to the coronavirus shutdown. That means Barrett, his HR team of two and the rest of the museum staff have been working remotely since then. Despite working from home, Barrett still reports every weekday morning, including casual Fridays, donning a suit.

Barrett and his HR team have been busy building a mental-health kit for staff and a telecommuting policy tailored for a post-coronavirus world. The team meets for one hour at 3 p.m. over Zoom every day, and joins with the entire museum staff every month.

Barrett doesn’t require his staff to adhere to an HR dress code. But wearing a suit for Barrett goes way beyond just looking sharp. "In order to disarm the skin color I cannot remove, I put a suit on," Barrett said. "The seeds were then planted for what would become the bulk of my HR career: change management and DE&I (diversity, equality and inclusion).”
