Workplace Problems Logged Against Lord of the Rings Special Effects Company

Current and former staff of the visual effects studio responsible for films such as Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Avatar and Thor Ragnarok allege wide ranging complaints of a toxic workplace. So reports 1 News.

ring 1671094 640 1The Wellington Weta Workshop is alleged to have fostered an environment where harassment and bullying were allowed to run rampant. 1 News did not identify the workers who fear of being attacked for speaking out even if they have left the company. “The problem with that industry is people want to be there so badly, they just shut up,” one worker said. “They just shut up and accept it.”

Employees also complained of sexual harassment and how, despite their complaints to managers, nothing was done to the alleged abusers or to change the culture. “The culture of systemic bullying at Weta is top-down, if you bring up problems, you’ll likely be seen as a troublemaker and let go,” one person said, according to the article, which ran late this summer. “People working on projects together at times deliberately sabotage other people’s work.”

Weta Worksop general manager David Wilks told 1 NEWS that they have “no tolerance for any form of harassment or bullying.”

“As a result of a previous historic allegation, we engaged an external organisation, Hive Consulting, in June to conduct a comprehensive and independent inquiry into current and historic allegations of this nature,” Wilks notes. "The scope of the inquiry is broad, looking into the specific allegation, along with the HR policies and procedures in place at that time. The inquiry is also receiving and considering any new information that may come to light as a result of this situation and considering the HR policies and procedures in place now.”
