Bah Hamburger: McDonalds Serves Up Christmas Eve Coal

As a case-in-point of the apparent disconnect between some restaurant workers struggling to earn a living wage and their employers, McDonald’s Corp. recently shut down its controversial "McResource" Website. So reports The Wall Street Journal.

 

The fast-food behemoth had set up the site, along with a related telephone help line, as an internal resource for employees trying to cope with budgetary difficulties, among other issues. The Website had been accused, by at least one advocacy group for hourly workers, of dispensing advice on reducing their intake of fast food for health reasons, cutting food portion sizes to help stretch limited budgets, and even on how much to tip household help for the holidays.

 

The help line was derided for offering employees counsel on obtaining a second job to help make ends meet – and even applying for government assistance. The timing of the memo from a senior HR officer announcing that McResource was going the way of the McDLT was interesting: it was sent out on Christmas Eve.
