Depression at Work: What Robin Williams' Suicide Teaches Us

Robin Williams' untimely death from an apparent suicide took many by surprise, even though Williams made no secret of his struggles with depression and substance abuse. As a show-business celebrity, Williams was in good company among a long litany of stars who have battled with depression and ended their own lives.

That said, and even though Williams was light years away from the corporate world, his demise should serve as a reminder to HR professionals and managers everywhere of the prevalence of depression in the workplace – to the tune of $80 billion in annual lost productivity, according to one source.  There is an opportunity to turn his misfortune into a teachable moment for employees who may be suffering in silence.
