Chief among those changes are distinct differences in leadership style and the accompanying workplace dynamics. The release of a comprehensive global study by recruitment and staffing firm Hudson entitled "The Great Generational Shift" sheds light on the personality traits of the three primary age groups making up the 2014 workforce – Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y – and how the simultaneous employment of multiple generations is creating new challenges for corporate management.
Boomers have long assumed the leadership roles of "parent" and decision-maker in many corporate environments; while Gen X has straddled the divide between the elder and younger workers, and Gen Y is thought of as "people-oriented and ambitious." The upshot is that, while traditional roles evolve, four generations (including Gen Z) with very different ideas and approaches to problem-solving must learn to share the work space in pursuit of common goals.
