So-called "collaborative" messaging systems like HipChat, Yammer, Mailstrom and Xobni (purchased by Yahoo last year) are emerging and gaining traction in the corporate world. Software packages Ommwriter and Freedom are designed to disable Internet access for periods of time. Acompli, which streamlines mobile e-mail, was recently bought by Microsoft.

Companies overseas, and even governments, are also struggling with the electronic deluge in different ways:

  • Volkswagen instituted a policy several years ago of cutting off corporate e-mail to company-owned BlackBerry devices after work hours
  • French firm Atos tried banning internal e-mail completely
  • Germany is trying to pass a law that prevents employers from contacting their staffers after hours

Most of us and our teams will continue to navigate cyber-messaging during our workdays in 2015, but we may begin to see some alternative systems emerge.
