On Valentine’s Day at the Office, Have a Heart... and Maybe Some Chocolate

Some offices celebrate it; others never give it a thought (which may be the safest option this year, with stories about sexual harassment and college-campus sexual misconduct filling the airwaves lately). This week is St. Valentine’s Day, known in 20th-century history as the backdrop for a notorious Chicago mob-related massacre; and to everyone else as a romantic holiday for couples and lovers. Some shops observe every red-letter calendar day from Halloween to Easter. So if Valentine’s Day is observed in your workplace, better to play it safe with a box of heart-shaped chocolates for the whole team than to single out individuals for recognition on that day.

It’s also a day when many people go out to dinner or plan a special evening with their significant others, so try to avoid asking people to work late. Better yet, let everyone leave a little early – even if you know some of your employees have no plans. With Valentine's Day falling on a Saturday this year, it shouldn't be an issue, but its a good rule of thumb year in and year out. Above all, it’s a good time to remember office decorum and discourage any kind of behavior, posting or messaging that could be construed as sexual (or sexist) in any way.
