Office Politics: Don’t Ignore Them, Learn to Play the Game

All jobs are prone to a degree of office politics. Human nature, says business psychology professor Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, is inherently emotional and tends to yield a sometimes invisible power struggle among colleagues. So reports WNYC.

He said, though, the competition isn’t always malicious. While paying attention, understanding others and being skeptical can be helpful and healthy to an employee jockeying for position.

Further, he said, being too political can be detrimental and could ultimately lead to self-destruction. Once you’ve gotten to where you want to be, its best to “stop playing the Machiavellian game.”
