Preventing Presenteeism's Productivity Costs

Too many employees missing work due to illness can hinder productivity, but so can chronic "presenteeism," which is too many employees showing up sick. So reports Newsday.

Experts cited a number of ways to combat this, including instituting prevention and wellness policies, creating an office culture that allows one to comfortably take off from work when ill, and educating employees on the importance of hand washing and other hygienic activities.

Employers should also be careful to not simply send employees home when they exhibit symptoms of chronic illnesses, as it may be a violation of federal and state disability discrimination statutes.
