Research: Men More Likely to Take Paternity Leave for Birth of a Son

California men are more likely to take paternity leave for a male child than a female child, according to a recently published research report. So reports NBC News.

“Overall, men are 58% more likely to take time off if they're having a son than if they're having a daughter — with the exception of the first birth.” They are way more likely to take advantage of California’s paid family leave for a first child than subsequent children. Men are also more likely to take paternity leave when they are in “female dominated professions.”

California is one of three states to offer paid family leave for full-time employees. The research is consistent with other studies that indicate men are more likely to claim paternity and custody of sons after divorce.
