Do You Have What It Takes to Be a ‘Director of Toughness’?

Oregon-based Columbia received more than 1,000 applications for what some outdoor enthusiasts would consider a dream job. So reports grough

So-called “directors of toughness” will be charged with testing the company’s outdoor products in the most extreme weather during a nine-month span that will take them around the world. Columbia’s HR team selected 20 finalists, but to even be considered these applicants had to first find their way to interview sites in four remote spots, two in the US, one in Canada and another in the U.K.

“Reaching the interview destinations shouldn’t be a problem for anyone with the chops to apply,” Columbia notes on its site (PDF). “No one says that it’s a ‘cake’ job where you sit at a desk all day.”

Lauren Steele and Zach Doleac were the first directors of toughness, with each spending six months venturing around the world. Their treks included climbing up a snowy Mount Hood and training with Olympic gold medalists. “At times traveling can be isolating. We had to drop everything and leave our jobs, friends, and family for 6-months,” Doleac said on Columbia’s site.

“At the time, it was difficult to appreciate the opportunities we were getting because of how fast we were moving around. But going back and watching the culminating video, holy $h*t!! Who wouldn’t want that job?! I’m definitely applying again under a pseudonym!”

The next directors of toughness will earn $39,000 over the nine months, which will run No. 15 to Aug. 15.
