Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson and the city of Chicago submitted court papers this month to overturn a decision by the city’s Human Resources Board to include Patrick Lavin on the list for potential hires.
Johnson and the city contend Lavin should not be considered due to his involvement in a fight in 2011 that led to felony aggravated battery, battery and a hate crime charge. The aggravated battery and hate crime charges were dismissed and Lavin pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor battery charge.
An investigator for the police department’s human resources division in January told the Human Resources Board that he believed evidence showed Lavin committed a crime even though he was not convicted. But in April, the Human Resources Board and a hearing officer decided that Lavin should remain on the list.
