Handy Interview Pointers for Summer Intern Candidates

Even though they’re short-term gigs, internships can be as competitive as full-time job openings. Because undergraduates are younger and have less work experience than say, graduate students entering (or re-entering) the job market, they may not come to the interview armed with questions that can make them appear more enthusiastic about the position, and a potentially better fit for the employer.

To that end, the author of a recent Business Insider article offers some do’s and don’ts for prospective interns in terms of interview questions. By all means, candidates should feel free to ask about:

  • Skills and abilities necessary to succeed in the position
  • If hired, how they can achieve a top performance review
  • How they can best serve the company
  • What else they can answer that the interviewer may not have touched on
  • What, if anything, they can provide the interviewer when they follow up

To not spoil their chances, interviewees should avoid asking about time off, schedule accommodations or benefits. Better to focus on the employer and the position at hand.
