Michael De'Sean White worked as a DeKalb County School District teacher and was hired despite not being certified to teach. The school district, which already faces a shortage of teachers, made three questionable teacher hires last year, including the 26-year-old White.
One of those teachers hired last year quit after The Atlanta Journal-Constitution informed district officials that a school district in Ohio fired her for allegedly assaulting students. The district also rehired a French teacher who retired in 2016 to avoid being fired following allegations from students of color that she spoke disparagingly about immigration after Donald Trump became president. Both of those teachers denied the allegations that forced them to resign.
Police arrested White on March 23 and charged him in connection with a 2016 home invasion where Tatyiana Coates, 11, and her brother, Daveon, 15, were shot and killed while they slept in their home.
"The people running that (human resources) department should be dealt with severely," says Verdaillia Turner, president of the Georgia Federation of Teachers. "If they're not, then (Superintendent Steve Green) needs to walk--because the buck stops with him. If he's to stay, then he's to look out for the interest of our children's safety and the personnel in those schools."
