Creating a Workplace That Embraces LGBT

A recent Accenture study that reviewed data on more 22,000 men and women in 34 countries has come up with 40 factors needed to help employees excel in the workplace.

For companies that embrace the 40 factors, LGBT workers are one-and-a-half times more likely to get promoted to managers and three times more likely to rise to a senior manager position.

"Meaningful progress toward workplace equality requires new levels of flexibility, openness and transparency," Accenture notes. These include flexible hours, clear diversity goals, creative freedom, skills training and not asking workers to change their appearance to conform to a rigid norm.

The findings specific to LGBT employees came from responses from more than 1,500 employees in 31 countries that identify as part of that community.
"It is critical that companies create a truly human environment where people can be successful both professionally and personally--where they can be who they are and feel they belong, every day," said Ellyn Shook, chief leadership and human resources officer for Accenture.
