Interesting and Creative Alternatives to Office Holiday Parties

Some years we look forward to them. Other times we roll our eyes, take a deep breath and attend the inevitable holiday office party. Of course, during the Great Recession, many firms curtailed or cancelled annual celebrations altogether. Still, it's a festive time of year, and employers generally like to show their workforce some appreciation and holiday cheer.

It's a good opportunity to bring the firm (or department) together, but does it have to entail yet another impersonal restaurant or other venue? It's likely that your office fete has been planned, or even already taken place, this year. But here are some interesting ideas, via U.S. News World & Report, for alternative ways to celebrate this year or next, including:

  • Have a corporate brunch instead of dinner, and give staffers the rest of the day off
  • Organize a volunteer outing to a soup kitchen or a nursing home, and bring some cheer to the less fortunate
  • Make it an active celebration, at a health club or maybe on a sailboat or a hike, climate permitting
  • Hold the event at a local cooking school and let staffers create their own feast

Yes, there are other ways for your teams to bond and celebrate the season other than singing karaoke or communal time in the office cafeteria. All it takes is a little thinking outside the proverbial box.
