What Body Language Can Communicate Even More Than Words

Whether it’s in face-to-face interviews with job candidates, meetings with business partners, or in a staff meeting, people’s body language often sends messages intentionally or not.

Emotional intelligence resource TalentSmart finds that 90% of top performers in business exhibit high levels of emotional intelligence, and are likely aware of the importance that body language can play in building a successful career. That's according to a recent post on Monster.com.

The blog highlights a number of body-language blunders that people typically make, some more readily apparent than others. Some of the less obvious red flags to watch for in your own body language or that of individuals you interact with include:  

  • Inconsistency between someone’s words and facial expressions, which can make others doubt sincerity and arouse suspicion
  • Insufficient or excessive eye contact, which can indicate a lack of interest in what’s being said or low self-confidence in the former case; and can be taken for aggressiveness or an attempt to dominate in the latter
  • Handshakes that are too weak (suggests a lack of confidence or authority) or too firm (overly aggressive or trying to dominate)
  • Intrusion into someone’s personal space. It is best to keep at least 18 inches between you and the person you’re speaking with. Otherwise it can indicate a lack of proper boundaries or respect for the other person’s space
