Even in the Post-Post-'Mad Men' Era, Sex Discrimination Lives On

The runaway hit cable series “Mad Men,” about Madison Avenue in the 1960s, is now in the rearview mirror. It’s in some ways a stretch to understand the show’s appeal, with its retro look at a (thankfully) bygone era when sexism, racism and numerous other flavors of bigotry ran amuck in a free-wheeling corporate world prior to the advent of the EEOC and political correctness. So reports HR Morning.

Fast-forward to 2015 Chicago, where two discrimination lawsuits filed by the EEOC resulted in a judgment of $800,000 against Source One Staffing. Of that judgment, $70,000 was awarded to two female plaintiffs who sued the employment agency for sexual harassment and retaliation after they reported attempted sexual advances by their supervisor; the hefty remainder of the sum went to a class of female employees who were turned away from certain jobs because of their sex.

In addition to accusations that it assigned female employees to a known hostile work environment, Source One apparently classified jobs as “women’s work” or “men’s work,” and assigned employees accordingly. In addition, the agency reportedly asked prospective employees inappropriate medical questions and was found to have discriminated against employees on the basis of their race and/or national origin.

On top of the financial judgments, the agency is required to be in compliance with all federal bias laws, including Title VII and the Americans with Disabilities Act. The EEOC, for its part, will keep a close eye on Source One during a three-year compliance decree imposed by the courts.
