Paid parental leave is currently offered only to U.S. Facebook staffers, but will go global starting January 1. Notably, the policy change is thought to be a boon to both new fathers and same-sex couples. The firm’s maternity-leave policy, already available to employees around the world, remains unchanged.
Still, the move is seen as a strong endorsement for family time, which more professionals in Silicon Valley and other industries are clamoring for, especially younger employees who are thinking of starting a family.
Tech companies, in an effort to attract and retain valued employees, have been ahead of the curve on many ground-breaking corporate perks, and a number have lately been offering more generous parental-leave allowances. Zuckerberg, in announcing his intended paternity leave, has seemingly chosen to lead by example.
